Introduction
"Treasures of Russia" presents you a survey of Russian Art
(painting, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts) from the 11th
to early 20th century.
The program includes:
- over 250 super-high quality full screen 256 colors images;
- over 500 pages of English text (more than 800 pages
of Russian text in Russian version) divided into about 600
cross-linked chapters;
- interactive maps and Time Line screens;
- 5 video clips;
- 5 music slide shows;
- 40 minutes of high quality stereo sound;
- audio records of the titles of all program images both
in English and in Russian.
Part I. QUICK START
1.1 System configuration
To run "Treasures of Russia" you need:
- IBM or IBM compatible PC 386SX or higher
- MS-DOS v.3.3 or later
- WINDOWS v.3.1 or later
- 4 MB RAM minimum
- 30 MB hard disk minimum (1 MB of free space on hard
disk)
- MPC compliant CD drive with MSCDEX v.2.2 or later
- SVGA card with 512 KB RAM minimum
- Color monitor
- Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
- MPC-compatible audio board (sound card). It is not
obligatory, but strongly recommended.
Before installing and running the program please check
if sound card software is installed properly on your computer. You
can do this by loading any other program which has sound.
Notes:
a/ If you do not have a sound card on your computer or you
have problems with sound card software then the program will run
properly without sound functions (music, narration). Any of the
sound messages appearing in the appropriate window should be
ignored (by choosing OK or CANCEL ).
b/ There can be music interruptions while playing slide-shows
in Music & Arts Mode.
To avoid them select Drivers from Control Panel,
then select MCI Sound and choose Install, after that set maximum memory
for buffering audio-data.
c/ Any 256 colors SVGA drivers are supported with
resolution of 640x480 or higher. But for better quality we
recommend 640x480 drivers with over 256 colors support (32K colors
or higher).
If SVGA driver you need is not loaded in your current
Windows session, then load it with Windows SetUp function. After
"Treasures of Russia" session return to SVGA driver you use
normally on your computer with similar Windows SetUp procedure.
If SVGA driver you need is not installed on your computer,
install it with appropriate Windows procedure.
1.2 Installation
Please follow the next steps:
1. Turn on your computer and start Windows.
2. Place "Treasures of Russia" disk into CD ROM drive.
3. Open Program Manager window and choose Run from File
menu.
4. Type n:\SETUP, where n is the name of your CD ROM
drive.
5. Click OK.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Notes:
a/ Installation program installs both English and Russian
versions of "Treasures of Russia" on your computer. During
installation several DLL files are copying on your hard disk into
SYSTEM sub-directory of Windows directory.
b/ Installation program creates Windows program group
specifically for "Treasures of Russia". There are four icons in
this group.
Icon with "Treasures of Russia" in English.
Icon with "Treasures of Russia" in Russian.
Icon with "Read Me" in English.
Icon with "Read Me" in Russian.
c/ Before going to the next steps please be sure that
standard Windows fonts are properly installed on your computer.
English version of "Treasures of Russia" program uses the
following Windows fonts:
Arial
Times New Roman
System
Russian version of "Treasures of Russia" program uses the
following Cyrillic fonts, included in Russian version of Windows 3.1:
System
Arial Cyr
Courier New Cyr
Times New Roman Cyr
d/ English version of program will be run properly on any
computer where English or other national Windows version
(Russian, French etc.) is installed.
e/ If you do not have Windows Cyrillic fonts on your PC
then the Russian texts under "Treasures of Russia" icons can not be
read properly.
f/ Russian version of program will be run properly on any
computer where Russian version of Windows is installed or where
the Cyrillic fonts listed above are installed.
g/ Please consult Microsoft Corporation or other
independent vendor to receive such Cyrillic fonts if you wish to
work with Russian version on your English or other language
version of Windows.
h/ If you do not need to work with Russian version on your
computer, please remove appropriate two icons from "Treasures of
Russia" program group. To do this you can use standard Windows
procedure.
1.3 Displaying ReadMe
Using the program is so simple that you do not need to
read special manual before you start to work with the "Treasures
of Russia" program. And HELP function is available at any point
in the program.
But if you want to be familiar with the concept of
"Treasures of Russia" program we recommend that you read Part II of
these instructions.
To do this you need:
1. Click left button of the mouse on ReadMe icon.
2. Read this text appearing on the screen with Notepad
editor.
Note: we will use the word "click" instead of "click left
button of the mouse" in the next chapters.
1.4 Running the program
1. Click "Treasures of Russia" icon.
2. After musical introduction the Main Menu appears on
the screen.
When you first enter the Main Menu there is a Toolbox icon
in the left bottom part of the screen. Toolbox buttons are necessary
for you for navigating in the title. We recommend you to open the icon
by clicking twice.
1.5 Navigating in the program
1. You should click desired object (menu item, image,
screen button, hypertext) to go to the next step only. All parts
of the program are menu driven.
2. Sound (music, narration) can be interrupted anywhere
in the program and at any time by clicking.
3. There are several menus in the program:
a/ Artistic Screen menus
b/ ToolBox menu
c/ Full Image Mode menu
d/ System menu.
4. After loading the program only ToolBox icon appears on
the screen in the left corner. You can click this icon twice
when you need to open Toolbox menu, consisting of two rows of
buttons. You can close ToolBox menu by clicking the upper part of
opened ToolBox menu twice.
5. Full Image Mode menu appears on the screen only when
Full Image is selected. It has one row of screen buttons in the
left part of the screen.
6. System menu appears if you click appropriate button in
ToolBox Menu.
7. You can click any part of the screen where the cursor
changes its form ( e.g. into a hand, feather or catching hand).
You can click also any screen button of ToolBox Menu and Full
Image Mode menu as well as any selection of item in System menu.
8. You can call Help function by clicking Help button of
the ToolBox menu or by choosing the Help item from the system
menu.
1.6 Exit the program
Any of Windows standard exit function can be applied to
exit the "Treasures of Russia" program.
If you want to be familiar with "Treasures of Russia" in
greater detail you are welcome to read Part II of these instructions.
Part II. "TREASURES OF RUSSIA" DETAILS
2.1 General Instructions
2.1.1 Basics
To use "Treasures of Russia" you click buttons, pictures,
and highlighted text.
As a rule your mouse pointer changes from the arrow to
the pointing hand when it is over a place that you can click (a
hot spot). The only exceptions are the Toolbox buttons and the
System menu.
There can be text hot spots (a word or phrase) and
picture hot spots (a picture or part of a picture). Text hot
spots are usually displayed in a different color than the
surrounding text (see Book Mode).
Clicking hot spots can bring up pop-up windows. Pop-ups are
displayed over other windows. To remove the pop-up, click anywhere
outside of the pop-up or press the ESC key.
2.1.2 Main Menu
The Main Menu consists of six pictures presenting six
main modes of the program:
Music & Arts
Book
Topics
Video Clips
Maps
Time Line
By clicking the appropriate picture you will invoke the
desired mode.
When you first enter the Main Menu there is a
Toolbox icon in the left bottom part of the screen. Toolbox
buttons are necessary for you for navigating in the title. We
recommend you to open the icon by clicking twice.
2.1.3 The ToolBox menu
On the bottom left part of the screen there is the
Toolbox icon. It can be opened by clicking twice.
The Toolbox consists of fourteen buttons:
Book - jumping to the Book mode contents.
Map - jumping to the Map mode.
Topics - jumping to the Topics mode.
Time Line - jumping to the Time Line mode.
Previous - displaying the previous topic in the series
(if any).
Next - displaying the next topic in the series (if
any).
Back - retracing previous steps backwards.
History - displaying a list of the last 40 topics you
have viewed. Double-click any topic title to redisplay the topic.
Search by keywords - searching chapters by a keyword.
This command displays the list of keywords. You can select a word
from the list, and then display a chapter that contains
information related to that word.
Full-Text Search - searching chapters containing a
particular word or combination of words. This feature not only
takes you to the topic found, but highlights the word or words
found by the search. You can use search operators such as AND,
OR, NOT and NEAR to further narrow your search.
Up - jumping to the higher topic in the hierarchy (if
any).
Main Menu - jumping to the Main menu.
System Menu - turning on/off the system menu.
Help - displaying the Help.
If you do not want to see the opened Toolbox you can close
it by clicking twice to the blue caption of the Toolbox.
If you want to move the Toolbox you can do it by
positioning the pointer on the Toolbox caption, pressing the left
mouse's button, moving the Toolbox to the desired place and
releasing the mouse button.
2.1.4 System menu
After starting "Treasures of Russia" the system menu is not
visible. To see it click the System Menu button in the Toolbox.
"Treasures of Russia" system menu contains the following
menu items:
File
Edit
Bookmark
Language
Help
The File menu contains these commands:
- Print Topic - prints the displayed topic (assuming
you have a printer installed and turned on).
- Print Setup - displays a dialogue box in which you
can change printer settings before printing.
- Exit - closes "Treasures of Russia".
The Edit menu contains these commands:
- Copy - places a copy of the displayed topic in a
dialogue box where you can select text to copy to the Clipboard.
- Annotate - displays a dialogue box in which you can
attach your own notes to the current topic. After annotating a
topic you will see a paper clip icon to the left of the topic
heading. To view an annotation click the paper clip icon.
The Bookmark menu contains these commands:
- Define - displays a dialogue box in which you can add
a bookmark to the current topic or delete an existing bookmark.
After placing a bookmark at a topic, you can quickly display that
topic from the Bookmark menu.
- More - appears only when more than nine bookmarks
have been added to the Bookmark menu. Displays a dialogue box in
which you can select a bookmark.
The Language menu contains these commands:
- English - starts English version of "Treasures of Russia"
- Russian - starts Russian version of "Treasures of Russia"
The Help menu contains the following items:
- Contents
- About Authors
- About Viewer
2.1.5 Links window
After clicking small images in different modes the Links
window will appear on the screen. This window contains a small
image (by clicking the small image you jump to the Full Image
Mode) and the four buttons:
Book
By clicking the Book button you go to the chapter of the
Book Mode related to the small image.
Map
By clicking the Map button you go to the map related to
the small image.
Time Line
By clicking the Time Line button you go to the time line
screen related to the current image.
Topic
By clicking the Topic button you go to the Topics Mode
screen related to the current image.
The pointer does not change to the pointing hand when it
is over an inactive button.
2.2 Program modes
There are six main modes (Book, Topics, Time Line, Map,
Music&Arts, Video) any of which you can select from the Main
Menu. From the first four modes you can enter the Full Image
mode.
2.2.1 The Book Mode
2.2.1.1 The Book Mode Contents
After entering the Book Mode from the Main Menu or by
pressing Book button in the ToolBox the Book Mode Contents screen
appears. It consists of six images where each image represents a
part of the book, with main parts in the upper row: Ancient
Russian Art, 18th Century Art, 19th and early 20th Century Art;
and auxiliary parts in the lower row: Images, Artists, Index.
After clicking these images the contents of the
corresponding part of the book appear.
Text and images represented in Book Mode show the most
important works of art created by Russian masters. The authors of
"Treasures of Russia" made appropriate selections based on their
understanding and knowledge of Russian Art. This material is not
exhaustive, but it gives users of different age and education level
basic knowledge about Russian Art.
Contents of the main parts of the book are organized in a
single browse sequence. So you can browse all main text contents
using Previous and Next buttons of the Toolbox.
In all parts of the book the screen consists of two
panels: text panel and illustration panel.
For instructions about working with main parts of
the book see Book Mode.
When you invoke Images time periods appear on the
illustration panel. After clicking any time period the list of
corresponding art works displays on the text panel. To see an art
work in the Full Image Mode you must click the appropriate line
in the list.
When you invoke Artists the alphabet appears on the
illustration panel and the list of artists in alphabetical
order - on the text panel. After clicking any letter
in the alphabet the list of the artists whose names begin with
the letter displays on the text panel. To display an article
about an artist you must click the appropriate name in the list.
When you invoke Index the alphabet appears on the
illustration panel and the list of keywords in alphabetical
order - on the text panel. Clicking any letter in
the alphabet displays the list of the keywords beginning with the
letter on the text panel. The result of clicking a keyword
depends on the type of reference (see Book Mode).
2.2.1.2 Working in the Book Mode
In the Book Mode the screen consists of two panels: the
text panel and the illustration panel.
There can be three types of hot spots in the text panel:
- dark yellow reference is the image reference and it is
used for invoking a new illustration image to the screen;
- green dot underlined reference is the reference to a
text in a pop-up window. It is displayed over the current window.
To remove the pop-up window click anywhere outside of the pop-up,
or press the ESC key;
- dark red reference is the reference to another chapter
accompanied by illustration.
After clicking an image (if it is active) on the
illustration panel the Links window appears.
All chapters of the main text describing art works are
organized in a single browse sequence. So you can browse all
these chapters using Previous and Next buttons of the Toolbox.
While reading chapters of the main text use Up button of
the Toolbox for jumping to the appropriate contents.
2.2.2 The Topics Mode
In this mode all program images are divided by pictorial
type into six broad categories, each of which is then subdivided.
When you choose Topics in the Main menu, the Topics Mode
first level menu appears. Pressing any image on this menu causes
the menu of the second level to appear. Pressing any image of the
second level menu screen causes the third level menu to appear.
Here you can see slides of appropriate works of art. Clicking any slide
causes the Links Window to appear. To close the Links Window
click anywhere outside it.
You can browse all screens with the same level of the
hierarchy using Previous and Next buttons of the Toolbox. Use Up
button of the Toolbox for jumping to the higher level of the
hierarchy.
2.2.3 The Map Mode
When you choose MAPS of the main menu, Map Mode screen
appears. You can select any of the maps of Russia from 10th to 20th
century and see icons ARTS, PEOPLE and EVENTS on this map.
Clicking on any icon you can get appropriate list of
hypertexts or Links Window (see above).
All maps are organized in a single browse sequence. You
can browse all maps using Previous and Next buttons of the
ToolBox menu.
2.2.4 The Time Line Mode
When you choose TIME LINE of the Main menu you can see
the appropriate time line.
You can select from any of the centuries on the upper row
of time line screen and/or move time line with appropriate scroll
bars. There are three sections on the time line - ARTS, PEOPLE
and EVENTS with appropriate slides in each section. By clicking
any slide you obtain appropriate Links Window or appropriate information
in pop-up window.
All time line screens are organized in a single browse
sequence. So you can browse time line screens using Previous and
Next buttons of the ToolBox menu.
2.2.5 Full Image Mode
Full screen images are displayed by clicking slide in
Links Window. All full screen images are organized in a browse
sequence corresponding with Images part of the book. So you can
browse all full screen images using Previous and Next buttons of
the ToolBox menu.
There are additional buttons on the left side of the
screen (the pointer does not change to the pointing hand when it
is over an inactive button):
Lens - enlarge any detail of the current image. After
clicking the button position the pointer on the lens's handle,
press the left mouse's button and move the lens to the desired
part of the image. After releasing the mouse button the part of
the image into the lens nearly doubles in size.
Zoom - nearly doubles the current image. To move the
image click the appropriate button of the block. To stop the moving
click anywhere. To return from the zoom mode click the central
button of the block.
Info - displays full title of the current image.
Only Image - removes all but the image from the screen.
Speech - plays the audio record of the title of the
current image.
Book - go to the chapter of the book related to the
current image.
Map - go to the map related to the current image.
Time Line - go to the time line screen related to the
current image.
Topics Mode - go to the Topics Mode screen related to
the current image.
Objects - in some images there is additional
information about objects of the image and some fragments of the
image can exist as independent images. The pointer changes from
the arrow to the feather when it is over a place with additional
information and it changes to the catching hand when it is over a
fragment existing as independent image.
You can open these fragments or receive additional
information by clicking the appropriate parts of the image.
Click this button to see where are such fragments and
places with additional information.
Music - playing music while you see the image. After
clicking the button the list of musical works appears. To
play the desired music click on the appropriate line of the
list. To stop the music click anywhere.
2.2.6 Music & Arts Mode
When you press Music & Arts button of the Main Menu the
Music & Arts menu appears. You can select any of six choices in
this menu. Appropriate selection allows you to listen to selected
music and to see the corresponding slide-show.
2.2.7 Video Mode
When you press Video button of the main menu the Video
menu appears. You can select any of five choices and see
the appropriate video clip.
