  1.                           Introduction
  2.        
  3.        "Treasures of Russia" presents you a survey of Russian Art
  4. (painting, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts) from the 11th
  5. to early 20th century.
  6.        The program includes:
  7.        - over 250 super-high quality full screen 256 colors images;
  8.        - over 500 pages of English text (more than 800 pages
  9. of Russian text in Russian version) divided into about 600
  10. cross-linked chapters;
  11.        - interactive maps and Time Line screens;
  12.        - 5 video clips;
  13.        - 5 music slide shows;
  14.        - 40 minutes of high quality stereo sound;
  15.        - audio records of the titles of all program images both
  16. in English and in Russian.

  19.        Part I. QUICK START
  20.        
  21.        1.1 System configuration
  22.        
  23.        To run "Treasures of Russia" you need:
  24.        - IBM or IBM compatible PC 386SX or higher
  25.        - MS-DOS v.3.3 or later
  26.        - WINDOWS v.3.1 or later
  27.        - 4 MB RAM minimum
  28.        - 30 MB hard disk minimum (1 MB of free space on hard
  29. disk)
  30.        - MPC compliant CD drive with MSCDEX v.2.2 or later
  31.        - SVGA card with 512 KB RAM minimum
  32.        - Color monitor
  33.        - Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
  34.        - MPC-compatible audio board (sound card). It is not
  35. obligatory, but strongly recommended.
  36.        
  37.        Before installing and running the program please check
  38. if sound card software is installed properly on your computer. You
  39. can do this by loading any other program which has sound.
  40.        
  41.        Notes:
  42.        a/ If you do not have a sound card on your computer or you
  43. have problems with sound card software then the program will run
  44. properly without sound functions (music, narration). Any of the
  45. sound messages appearing in the appropriate window should be
  46. ignored (by choosing OK or CANCEL ).
  47.        b/ There can be music interruptions while playing slide-shows
  48. in Music & Arts Mode. 
  49.        To avoid them select Drivers from Control Panel,
  50. then select MCI Sound and choose Install, after that set maximum memory
  51. for buffering audio-data.
  52.        c/ Any 256 colors SVGA drivers are supported with
  53. resolution of 640x480 or higher. But for better quality we
  54. recommend 640x480 drivers with over 256 colors support (32K colors
  55. or higher).
  56.        If SVGA driver you need is not loaded in your current
  57. Windows session, then load it with Windows SetUp function. After
  58. "Treasures of Russia" session return to SVGA driver you use
  59. normally on your computer with similar Windows SetUp procedure.
  60.         If SVGA driver you need is not installed on your computer,
  61. install it with appropriate Windows procedure.
  62.        
  63.        1.2 Installation
  64.        
  65.        Please follow the next steps:
  66.        1. Turn on your computer and start Windows.
  67.        2. Place "Treasures of Russia" disk into CD ROM drive.
  68.        3. Open Program Manager window and choose Run from File
  69. menu.
  70.        4. Type n:\SETUP, where n is the name of your CD ROM
  71. drive.
  72.        5. Click OK.
  73.        6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  74.        
  75.        Notes:
  76.        a/ Installation program installs both English and Russian
  77. versions of "Treasures of Russia" on your computer. During
  78. installation several DLL files are copying on your hard disk into
  79. SYSTEM sub-directory of Windows directory.
  80.        b/ Installation program creates Windows program group
  81. specifically for "Treasures of Russia". There are four icons in
  82. this group.
  83.        Icon with "Treasures of Russia" in English.
  84.        Icon with "Treasures of Russia" in Russian.
  85.        Icon with "Read Me" in English.
  86.        Icon with "Read Me" in Russian.
  87.        c/ Before going to the next steps please be sure that
  88. standard Windows fonts are properly installed on your computer.
  89.        English version of "Treasures of Russia" program uses the
  90. following Windows fonts:
  91.          Arial
  92.          Times New Roman
  93.          System
  94.        Russian version of "Treasures of Russia" program uses the
  95. following Cyrillic fonts, included in Russian version of Windows 3.1:
  96.          System
  97.          Arial Cyr
  98.          Courier New Cyr
  99.          Times New Roman Cyr
  100.        d/ English version of program will be run properly on any
  101. computer where English or other national Windows version
  102. (Russian, French etc.) is installed.
  103.        e/ If you do not have Windows Cyrillic fonts on your PC
  104. then the Russian texts under "Treasures of Russia" icons can not be
  105. read properly.
  106.        f/ Russian version of program will be run properly on any
  107. computer where Russian version of Windows is installed or where
  108. the Cyrillic fonts listed above are installed.
  109.        g/ Please consult Microsoft Corporation or other
  110. independent vendor to receive such Cyrillic fonts if you wish to
  111. work with Russian version on your English or other language
  112. version of Windows.
  113.        h/ If you do not need to work with Russian version on your
  114. computer, please remove appropriate two icons from "Treasures of
  115. Russia" program group. To do this you can use standard Windows
  116. procedure.
  117.        
  118.        1.3 Displaying ReadMe
  119.        
  120.        Using the program is so simple that you do not need to
  121. read special manual before you start to work with the "Treasures
  122. of Russia" program. And HELP function is available at any point
  123. in the program.
  124.        But if you want to be familiar with the concept of
  125. "Treasures of Russia" program we recommend that you read Part II of
  126. these instructions.
  127.        To do this you need:
  128.        1. Click left button of the mouse on ReadMe icon.
  129.        2. Read this text appearing on the screen with Notepad
  130. editor.
  131.        
  132.        Note: we will use the word "click" instead of "click left
  133. button of the mouse" in the next chapters.
  134.        
  135.        1.4 Running the program
  136.        
  137.        1. Click "Treasures of Russia" icon.
  138.        2. After musical introduction the Main Menu appears on
  139. the screen.
  140.        When you first enter the Main Menu there is a Toolbox icon
  141. in the left bottom part of the screen. Toolbox buttons are necessary
  142. for you for navigating in the title. We recommend you to open the icon
  143. by clicking twice.       
  144.        
  145.        1.5 Navigating in the program
  146.        
  147.        1. You should click desired object (menu item, image,
  148. screen button, hypertext) to go to the next step only. All parts
  149. of the program are menu driven.
  150.        2. Sound (music, narration) can be interrupted anywhere
  151. in the program and at any time by clicking.
  152.        3. There are several menus in the program:
  153.        a/ Artistic Screen menus
  154.        b/ ToolBox menu
  155.        c/ Full Image Mode menu
  156.        d/ System menu.
  157.        4. After loading the program only ToolBox icon appears on
  158. the screen in the left corner. You can click  this icon twice
  159. when you need to open Toolbox menu, consisting of two rows of
  160. buttons. You can close ToolBox menu by clicking the upper part of
  161. opened ToolBox menu twice.
  162.        5. Full Image Mode menu appears on the screen only when
  163. Full Image is selected. It has one row of screen buttons in the
  164. left part of the screen.
  165.        6. System menu appears if you click appropriate button in
  166. ToolBox Menu.
  167.        7. You can click  any part of the screen where the cursor
  168. changes its form ( e.g. into a hand, feather or catching hand).
  169. You can click also any screen button of ToolBox Menu and Full
  170. Image Mode menu as well as any selection of item in System menu.
  171.        8. You can call Help function by clicking Help button of
  172. the ToolBox menu or by choosing the Help item from the system
  173. menu.

  175.        1.6 Exit the program
  176.        
  177.        Any of Windows standard exit function can be applied to
  178. exit the "Treasures of Russia" program.
  179.        
  180.        
  181.        If you want to be familiar with "Treasures of Russia" in
  182. greater detail you are welcome to read Part II of these instructions.

  185.        Part II. "TREASURES OF RUSSIA" DETAILS
  186.        
  187.        2.1 General Instructions
  188.        
  189.        2.1.1 Basics
  190.        
  191.        To use "Treasures of Russia" you click buttons, pictures,
  192. and highlighted text.
  193.        As a rule your mouse pointer changes from the arrow to
  194. the pointing hand when it is over a place that you can click  (a
  195. hot spot). The only exceptions are the Toolbox buttons and  the
  196. System menu.
  197.        There can be text hot spots (a word or phrase) and
  198. picture hot spots (a picture or part of a picture). Text hot
  199. spots are usually displayed in a different color than the
  200. surrounding text (see Book Mode).
  201.        Clicking hot spots can bring up pop-up windows. Pop-ups are
  202. displayed over other windows. To remove the pop-up, click anywhere
  203. outside of the pop-up or press the ESC key.
  204.        
  205.        2.1.2 Main Menu
  206.        
  207.        The Main Menu consists of six pictures presenting six
  208. main modes of the program:
  209.             Music & Arts
  210.             Book
  211.             Topics
  212.             Video Clips
  213.             Maps
  214.             Time Line
  215.        By clicking the appropriate picture you will invoke the
  216. desired mode.
  217.        When you first enter the Main Menu there is a
  218. Toolbox icon in the left bottom part of the screen. Toolbox
  219. buttons are necessary for you for navigating in the title. We 
  220. recommend you to open the icon by clicking twice.
  221.        
  222.        2.1.3 The ToolBox menu
  223.        
  224.        On the bottom left part of the screen there is the
  225. Toolbox icon. It can be opened by clicking twice.
  226.        The Toolbox consists of fourteen buttons:
  227.         Book - jumping to the Book mode contents.
  228.         Map - jumping to  the Map mode.
  229.         Topics - jumping to  the Topics mode.
  230.         Time Line - jumping to the Time Line mode.
  231.         Previous - displaying the previous topic in the series
  232. (if any).
  233.         Next - displaying the next topic in the series (if
  234. any).
  235.         Back - retracing previous steps backwards.
  236.         History - displaying a list of the last 40 topics you
  237. have viewed. Double-click any topic title to redisplay the topic.
  238.         Search by keywords - searching chapters by a keyword.
  239. This command displays the list of keywords. You can select a word
  240. from the list, and then display a chapter that contains
  241. information related to that word.
  242.         Full-Text Search - searching chapters containing a
  243. particular word or combination of words. This feature not only
  244. takes you to the topic found, but highlights the word or words
  245. found by the search. You can use search operators such as AND,
  246. OR, NOT and NEAR to further narrow your search.
  247.         Up - jumping to the higher topic in the hierarchy (if
  248. any).
  249.         Main Menu - jumping to the Main menu.
  250.         System Menu - turning on/off the system menu.
  251.         Help - displaying the Help.
  252.        If you do not want to see the opened Toolbox you can close
  253. it by clicking twice to the blue caption of the Toolbox.
  254.        If you want to move the Toolbox you can do it by
  255. positioning the pointer on the Toolbox caption, pressing the left
  256. mouse's button, moving the Toolbox to the desired place and
  257. releasing the mouse button.

  259.        2.1.4 System menu
  260.        
  261.        After starting "Treasures of Russia" the system menu is not
  262. visible. To see it click the System Menu button in the Toolbox.
  263.        "Treasures of Russia" system menu contains the following
  264. menu items:
  265.          File
  266.          Edit
  267.          Bookmark
  268.          Language
  269.          Help
  270.        The File menu contains these commands:
  271.         - Print Topic - prints the displayed topic (assuming
  272. you have a printer installed and turned on).
  273.         - Print Setup - displays a dialogue box in which you
  274. can change printer settings before printing.
  275.         - Exit - closes "Treasures of Russia".
  276.        The Edit menu contains these commands:
  277.         - Copy - places a copy of the displayed topic in a
  278. dialogue box where you can select text to copy to the Clipboard.
  279.         - Annotate - displays a dialogue box in which you can
  280. attach your own notes to the current topic. After annotating a
  281. topic you will see a paper clip icon to the left of the topic
  282. heading. To view an annotation click the paper clip icon.
  283.        The Bookmark menu contains these commands:
  284.         - Define - displays a dialogue box in which you can add
  285. a bookmark to the current topic or delete an existing bookmark.
  286. After placing a bookmark at a topic, you can quickly display that
  287. topic from the Bookmark menu.
  288.         - More - appears only when more than nine bookmarks
  289. have been added to the Bookmark menu. Displays a dialogue box in
  290. which you can select a bookmark.
  291.        The Language menu contains these commands:
  292.         - English - starts English version of "Treasures of Russia"
  293.         - Russian - starts Russian version of "Treasures of Russia"
  294.        The Help menu contains the following items:
  295.         - Contents
  296.         - About Authors
  297.         - About Viewer

  299.        2.1.5 Links window
  300.        
  301.        After clicking small images in different modes the Links
  302. window will appear on the screen. This window contains a small
  303. image (by clicking the small image you jump to the Full Image
  304. Mode) and the four buttons:
  305.         Book
  306.        By clicking the Book button you go to the chapter of the
  307. Book Mode related to the small image.
  308.         Map
  309.        By clicking the Map button you go to the map related to
  310. the small image.
  311.         Time Line
  312.        By clicking the Time Line button you go to the time line
  313. screen related to the current image.
  314.         Topic
  315.        By clicking the Topic button you go to the Topics Mode
  316. screen related to the current image.
  317.        The pointer does not change to the pointing hand when it
  318. is over an inactive button.

  321.        2.2 Program modes
  322.        
  323.        There are six main modes (Book, Topics, Time Line, Map,
  324. Music&Arts, Video) any of which you can select from the Main
  325. Menu. From the first four modes you can enter the Full Image
  326. mode.

  328.        2.2.1 The Book Mode
  329.        
  330.        2.2.1.1 The Book Mode Contents
  331.        
  332.        After entering the Book Mode from the Main Menu or by
  333. pressing Book button in the ToolBox the Book Mode Contents screen
  334. appears. It consists of six images where each image represents a
  335. part of the book, with main parts in the upper row: Ancient
  336. Russian Art, 18th Century Art, 19th and early 20th Century Art;
  337. and auxiliary parts in the lower  row: Images, Artists, Index.
  338.        After clicking these images the contents of the
  339. corresponding part of the book appear.
  340.        Text and images represented in Book Mode show the most
  341. important works of art created by Russian masters. The authors of
  342. "Treasures of Russia" made appropriate selections based on their
  343. understanding and knowledge of Russian Art. This material is not
  344. exhaustive, but it gives  users of different age and education level
  345. basic knowledge about Russian Art.
  346.        Contents of the main parts of the book are organized in a
  347. single browse sequence. So you can browse all main text contents
  348. using Previous and Next buttons of the Toolbox.
  349.        In all parts of the book the screen consists of two
  350. panels: text panel and illustration panel.
  351.        For instructions about working with main parts of
  352. the book see Book Mode.
  353.        When you invoke Images time periods appear on the
  354. illustration panel. After clicking any time period the list of
  355. corresponding art works displays on the text panel. To see an art
  356. work in the Full Image Mode you must click the appropriate line
  357. in the list.
  358.        When you invoke Artists the alphabet appears on the
  359. illustration panel and the list of artists in alphabetical
  360. order - on the text panel. After clicking any letter
  361. in the  alphabet the list of the artists whose names begin with
  362. the letter displays on the text panel. To display an article
  363. about an artist you must click the appropriate name in the list.
  364.        When you invoke Index the alphabet appears on the
  365. illustration panel and the list of keywords in alphabetical
  366. order - on the text panel. Clicking any letter in
  367. the alphabet displays the list of the keywords beginning with the
  368. letter on the text panel. The result of clicking a keyword
  369. depends on the type of reference (see Book Mode).

  371.        2.2.1.2 Working in the Book Mode
  372.        
  373.        In the Book Mode the screen consists of two panels: the
  374. text panel and the illustration panel.
  375.        There can be three types of hot spots in the text panel:
  376.         - dark yellow reference is the image reference and it is
  377. used for invoking a new illustration image to the screen;
  378.         - green dot underlined reference is the reference to a
  379. text in a pop-up window. It is displayed over the current window.
  380. To remove the pop-up window click anywhere outside of the pop-up,
  381. or press the ESC key;
  382.        - dark red reference is the reference to another chapter
  383. accompanied by illustration.
  384.        After clicking an image (if it is active) on the
  385. illustration panel the Links window appears.
  386.        All chapters of the main text describing art works are
  387. organized in a single browse sequence. So you can browse all
  388. these chapters using Previous and Next buttons of the Toolbox.
  389.        While reading chapters of the main text use Up button of
  390. the Toolbox for jumping to the appropriate contents.
  391.        
  392.        2.2.2 The Topics Mode
  393.        
  394.        In this mode all program images are divided by pictorial
  395. type into six broad categories, each of which is then subdivided.
  396.        When you choose Topics in the Main menu, the Topics Mode
  397. first level menu appears. Pressing any image on this menu causes
  398. the menu of the second level to appear. Pressing any image of the
  399. second level menu screen causes the  third level menu to appear.
  400. Here you can see slides of appropriate works of art. Clicking any slide
  401. causes the Links Window to appear. To close the Links Window
  402. click anywhere outside it.
  403.        You can browse all screens with the same level of the
  404. hierarchy using Previous and Next buttons of the Toolbox. Use Up
  405. button of the Toolbox for jumping to the higher level of the
  406. hierarchy.

  408.        2.2.3 The Map Mode
  409.        
  410.        When you choose MAPS of the main menu, Map Mode screen
  411. appears. You can select any of the maps of Russia from 10th to 20th
  412. century and see icons ARTS, PEOPLE and EVENTS on this map.
  413.        Clicking on any icon you can get appropriate list of
  414. hypertexts or Links Window (see above).
  415.        All maps are organized in a single browse sequence. You
  416. can browse all maps using Previous and Next buttons of the
  417. ToolBox menu.
  418.        
  419.        2.2.4 The Time Line Mode
  420.        
  421.        When you choose TIME LINE of the Main menu you can see
  422. the appropriate time line.
  423.        You can select from any of the centuries on the upper row
  424. of time line screen and/or move time line with appropriate scroll
  425. bars. There are three sections on the time line - ARTS, PEOPLE
  426. and EVENTS with appropriate slides in each section. By clicking
  427. any slide you obtain appropriate Links Window or appropriate information
  428. in pop-up window.
  429.        All time line screens are organized in a single browse
  430. sequence. So you can browse time line screens using Previous and
  431. Next buttons of the ToolBox menu.
  432.        
  433.        2.2.5 Full Image Mode
  434.        
  435.        Full screen images are displayed by clicking slide in
  436. Links Window. All full screen images are organized in a browse
  437. sequence corresponding with Images part of the book. So you can
  438. browse all full screen images using Previous and Next buttons of
  439. the ToolBox menu.
  440.        There are additional buttons on the left side of the
  441. screen (the pointer does not change to the pointing hand when it
  442. is over an inactive button):
  443.         Lens - enlarge any detail of the current image. After
  444. clicking the button position the pointer on the lens's handle,
  445. press the left mouse's button and move the lens to the desired
  446. part of the image. After releasing the mouse button the part of
  447. the image into the lens nearly doubles in size.
  448.         Zoom - nearly doubles the current image. To move the 
  449. image click the appropriate button of the block. To stop the moving
  450. click anywhere. To return from the zoom mode click the central
  451. button of the block.
  452.         Info - displays full title of the current image.
  453.         Only Image - removes all but the image from the screen.
  454.         Speech - plays the audio record of the title of the
  455. current image.
  456.         Book - go to the chapter of the book related to the
  457. current image.
  458.         Map - go to the map related to the current image.
  459.         Time Line - go to the time line screen related to the
  460. current image.
  461.         Topics Mode - go to the Topics Mode screen related to
  462. the current image.
  463.         Objects -  in some images there is additional
  464. information about objects of the image and some fragments of the
  465. image can exist as independent images. The pointer changes from
  466. the arrow to the feather when it is over a place with additional
  467. information and it changes to the catching hand when it is over a
  468. fragment existing as independent image.
  469.        You can open these fragments or receive additional
  470. information by clicking the appropriate parts of the image.
  471.        Click this button to see where are such fragments and
  472. places with additional information.
  473.         Music  - playing music while you see the image. After
  474. clicking the button the list of musical works appears. To
  475. play the desired music click on the appropriate line of the
  476. list. To stop the music click anywhere.

  478.        2.2.6 Music & Arts Mode
  479.        
  480.        When you press Music & Arts button of the Main Menu the
  481. Music & Arts menu appears. You can select any of six choices in
  482. this menu. Appropriate selection allows you to listen to selected
  483. music and to see the corresponding slide-show.

  485.        2.2.7 Video Mode
  486.        
  487.        When you press Video button of the main menu the Video
  488. menu appears. You can select any of five choices and see
  489. the appropriate video clip.
